What is Dry Cleaning?

Dry cleaning is a special way to clean delicate items of clothing without damaging them. Dry cleaning removes dirt and stains from clothing by using special liquid solvents like perchloroethylene. This solvent contains a very small amount or no water, which is why it is called ‘dry cleaning’.

Which Fabrics Require Dry Cleaning?

There are many fabrics that are best cleaned using the dry-cleaning method to ensure they do not shrink, lose their colour or distort their shape. Here are some of them, and why it is best to dry-clean them.

Silk needs dry cleaning as opposed to washing it with soap and water. This is because soap and water washing will not only drain the item of its colour, but also shrink it. Dry cleaning is the best way to avoid damaging silk items.

Wool also needs dry cleaning to ensure it does not shrink. Items made from wool can be very long lasting if taken care of in the proper way.

Leather should be dry cleaned to remove harsh stains that are made from ink or oil as these are often hard to get out. Such items will have special instructions on the labels for how to clean.

Denim is often put in a normal wash and dryer, but this can damage the item over time by shrinking or distorting the shape. Jeans should be washed in cold water and hung out to dry, either outside or in a room that is not too hot, but not in a dryer. Through dry cleaning, your denim items such as jeans will be more durable.

Linen can also be dry cleaned to take care of it in the best way possible. Linen can be washed by hand and put out to dry but ironing it after this can be tricky. Dry cleaning linen ensures that it does not fade or distort over time.

Suede should be dry cleaned to maintain it in the best way possible.

How Much Does Dry Cleaning Cost?

Dry-cleaning costs vary from company to company, but here at Dhobi London, our dry-cleaning service is affordable and up to a high standard. For a two-piece suit to be dry-cleaned by a professional, it costs just £12.50.

Trousers and jackets can be dry-cleaned separately as opposed to a suit. A pair of trousers cost just £6.50 to be cleaned and pressed, while a jacket will cost £7.50 to be dry-cleaned and hand finished.

For a dress to be dry-cleaned, the standard price is £10.50.
